Sometimes people come to coaching with a question. “Should I leave my job?” “Should I move?” “Should I stay in this relationship?” “What should I do next?” “Is this what I really want?” And sometimes… the question isn’t actually the question. Underneath: “Should I leave my job?” might be: “Why am I afraid to admit that I’m unhappy?” Underneath: “Should I stay?” might be: “Why am I so afraid of starting over?” Underneath: “What should I do next?” might be: “Who am I if I stop doing what everyone expects from me?” That’s one of the reasons I love coaching. Sometimes we need to get curious about the question itself. Because when you understand what’s really happening, the next step often becomes a whole lot clearer. It's a big reason why so many times during a coaching session clients say to me "Sonja! That ONE three minute (question, statement, thought) was worth the whole hour. If there’s something you’ve been turning over in your mind lately, you don’t have to arrive with the perfect question. Bring the messy version. Bring the “I don’t even know where to start” version. Bring the thing you’ve told three friends already and somehow still haven’t figured out. That’s what the hour is for. There’s something I’ve noticed about self-awareness. Most of us have gotten really good at observing ourselves… and really bad at being kind to the person we’re observing. We notice the pattern: “I always do this.” We recognize the behavior: “I knew I was going to do that.” We identify the trigger: “Of course that happened. I know exactly why.” And then we use our newfound awareness as evidence against ourselves. See? I’m still doing it. I should be further along. I should know better. I’ve...
I have a question for you Reader, What if you already know? Not everything. Not exactly how it’s going to work out. Not every step between where you are and where you want to be. But what if somewhere underneath all the thinking, researching, asking, analyzing, second-guessing and trying to make the “right” decision… you already know something? Maybe you know the relationship isn’t the problem. Maybe you know the relationship is the problem. Maybe you know you need to rest. Maybe you know you...
I’ve gotten a few responses since I started writing to you again Reader, And something I’ve noticed is that people aren’t necessarily looking for a giant life overhaul. They’re looking for a place to put what’s happening in their heads. A decision. A transition. A relationship. A career question. A nagging feeling. A desire they haven’t admitted out loud yet. A version of themselves they’re ready to leave behind. Or simply the question: “What the hell am I doing?” 🤨 I understand. And...
