There’s something I’ve noticed about self-awareness. Most of us have gotten really good at observing ourselves… and really bad at being kind to the person we’re observing. We notice the pattern: “I always do this.” We recognize the behavior: “I knew I was going to do that.” We identify the trigger: “Of course that happened. I know exactly why.” And then we use our newfound awareness as evidence against ourselves. See? I’m still doing it. I should be further along. I should know better. I’ve already worked on this. What’s wrong with me? I help my clients notice that’s not really self-awareness. It's self-judgment wearing a very sophisticated outfit. 😂 Self-awareness isn’t about collecting evidence for the prosecution.
It’s about becoming curious enough to tell the truth without immediately making yourself wrong for it.
“I notice I do this.” See how that's very different from “I can’t believe I still do this.” One creates information. The other creates shame. And shame is a terrible place to try and make good decisions from. Ask Yourself this:What's something I've recently caught myself doing that I’ve promised myself I wouldn’t do? And instead of asking: “Why am I like this?” replace it with: “Hmmm. What’s happening here?” You may be surprised by what you learn. Sincerely, Sonja P.S. I have a question for you Reader, What if you already know? Not everything. Not exactly how it’s going to work out. Not every step between where you are and where you want to be. But what if somewhere underneath all the thinking, researching, asking, analyzing, second-guessing and trying to make the “right” decision… you already know something? Maybe you know the relationship isn’t the problem. Maybe you know the relationship is the problem. Maybe you know you need to rest. Maybe you know you...
I’ve gotten a few responses since I started writing to you again Reader, And something I’ve noticed is that people aren’t necessarily looking for a giant life overhaul. They’re looking for a place to put what’s happening in their heads. A decision. A transition. A relationship. A career question. A nagging feeling. A desire they haven’t admitted out loud yet. A version of themselves they’re ready to leave behind. Or simply the question: “What the hell am I doing?” 🤨 I understand. And...
I realized something recently Reader “Private coaching session” can sound a little vague. So let me make it more concrete. When you book an hour with me you don’t have to show up with a five-year plan. You don’t need a perfectly articulated goal. And you definitely don’t need to impress me. You might start with: “I don’t know if this is even something you can help me with, but…” And then we go from there. Maybe you’re trying to make a decision. Maybe you’re questioning something you’ve been...
