Business Coach vs. Strategic Partner, What’s the Difference?

Reader

Whether you're a business of one or an organization with a small team, one thing is the same there a lot of moving parts daily.

And as the founder / owner it's up to you to make sure everything keeps moving forward.

Doing it all on your own can be is a lot!

One of the healthiest things I did for my wallet and well-being as an entrepreneur and leader was to enlist help.

I've worked with some of the most respected business coaches to teach me how to start and grow my businesses.

And I've hired experts to come in and DO the things I didn't know how to do.

But that was years after doing everything myself which led to periods of burnout from my own business.

I don't want that for you.

That's a huge reason I offer coaching and strategic partnering services to other female founders and business owners.

I'd say 90% of people that book inquiry calls with me know what Business Coaching is, they just want to know about my coaching style to make sure we "click".

But a lot of people get confused when I talk about being a Strategic Partner, because it sounds like coaching.
But here’s the truth: they're not the same.

Here’s a quick breakdown to help you see what’s what.

Coaching vs. Partnership:

Business Coach

  • Role: Facilitates awareness of current gaps in your business and promotes filling those gaps & growth thru goal setting.
  • Involvement: I guide you as the leader, but act outside of your business from the sidelines.
  • Access Level: Pre-set sessions only over 3 to 6 months
  • Implementation: No implementation.
  • Communications: During Coaching sessions, Standard email/Voxer.
  • Ownership: None, I'm considered a contracted worker / sub contractor not employee or legal owner of your business.

Strategic Partner

  • Role: Anticipates future needs, focuses on your businesses long-term overall success.
  • Involvement: I’m in it with you working as part of your leadership team, attend meetings, anticipates your future needs + make decision with you for overall success
  • Access Level: Full flexible access to me when you need me, scheduled or not for 6 months - 1 year.
  • Implementation: Light project management included as needed.
  • Communications: Private phone number for calls /texts as you need, Voxer, email, Zoom.
  • Ownership: None, I'm considered a contracted worker/ sub-contractor not employee or legal owner of your business.

As you can see, both are powerful depending on your needs.

Some clients thrive with structured guidance and accountability (coaching).

Others need me embedded inside the process, helping to steer the ship in real-time (partnership).

What's one question you have about hiring a strategic partner?

Hit reply to ask or leave me a voice note here:

I'm answering those in upcoming emails and maybe have you on my podcast where I'll coach you on your question.

In my next email, I’ll help you decide which one fits you best right now.

Sincerely,

Sonja

Hey Reader, Have you felt it lately? That pressure to figure out a new way to run your business—without a clear map? You’re not alone. And it’s not your fault. I’ve been hearing the same thing from so many entrepreneurs I work with: “I don’t think I want to offer this anymore... but I don’t know what’s next.” “The way I used to market isn’t working anymore.” “Everything feels harder than it used to—and I’m tired.” Listen, the market has changed. Buyer behavior has changed. You've changed. The...

Hey Reader If I’m being honest, this isn’t really a pivot. It’s a return. A reinvention of merging what’s always been true for me. You’ve probably heard me say this before, but I’ll say it again for the people in the back: We didn’t start these businesses just to box ourselves in. We wanted freedom. Flexibility. Fulfillment. And that means sometimes you have to let your business evolve—not just because you feel it, but because the market demands it. Right now, I’m seeing so many...

Hey Reader, I’ve been feeling my way through something for a while now. And I want to go ahead and say it out loud. You’ve heard me talk a lot about burnout, clarity, and energy management, and none of that is going anywhere. In fact, that's what the it’s what made this next step so clear to me. Here’s the thing: Over the last 18 months, I’ve found myself naturally returning to my roots. More and more I've been doing this work with entrepreneurs who’ve recently transitioned out of their...
